How to Get Rid Of Flies With Essential Oils

Essential Oils are used every day for a whole host of uses, we can use these natural oils to get rid of flies. There are plenty of essential oils to choose from and flies have a dislike to the odours that they kick out. I’m going to show you some of these essential oils and how to get rid of flies using them.
I’ll start with a list of essential oils which I know are great for repelling flies and other insects then I will show you how I use these essential oils to repel flies whenever needed.

Fly Repelling Essential Oils:

Here is my list of essential oils which will help you repel flies in your home. I will highlight some of my favourite ones. These essential oils I know to be very effective fly repellents.

List of Fly Repelling Essential Oils:

  • Lavender
  • Basil (Sacred Basil)
  • Citronella
  • Mint
  • Lemongrass
  • Eucalyptus
  • Thyme
  • Rosemary
  • Clove
  • Geranium
  • Tansy

There are a few more natural oils that are said to repel flies but I have not used them myself so I didn’t want to include them in this list. As you can see there is a decent range of natural oils you can use, some you may not like the smell of yourself so you can substitute it for a different one. I find its sometimes best to use these in combination with each other, for example if you make a fly repelling spray using 2 or 3 of these natural oils tends to work great but you may need to experiment to find a combination you like and that work for you.

How to Put These Essential Oils to Use and Repel Flies

I have 2 main methods for using essential oils against flies. You will find that you can use them for nearly everything, that can be as a body lotion or spray to repel flies or as an area repellent to stop flies entering a certain area. Here are my methods for repelling flies with essential oils:
Please Note: One thing to note with essential oils is that they can irritate your skin if used incorrectly always make sure you follow the instructions on the bottle. Lavender is very effective against flies and will not irritate your skin so I normally always recommend this. Other oils you will need to dilute with water first. Please refer to the instructions or the store you bought the oils from for more information.

Make an Essential Oils Pot to Repel Flies:

For this all you will need is a sealable clean container like a little metal tin or a glass jar, a piece of sponge like a bathroom sponge and of course a bottle of essential oil. I use lavender for this as it’s very effective at repelling flies and does not need diluting. Other good options are Basil, Eucalyptus and Citronella.

All you have to do is saturate your sponge or even a clean cloth in your chosen essential oil and place it into your sealable container. Put the lid on tight and allow it to sit for at least 12 hours, Now all you need to do after is take the lid off and place it in an area where you want to repel flies. You will find that after one use the odours that come from the pot would have dropped off after some time, so you will need to add more essential oil to the sponge and reseal it after each use.
Citronella also works great for this but you need to mix 1 part citronella with 3 parts of pure water before saturating your sponge. You can make as many of these pots as you need and place them anywhere you like some uses may be when you’re having a BBQ or relaxing in the garden.

Make a Fly Repelling Body Spray or Lotion from Essential Oils:

You can also make lotions and body sprays that you can use on yourself and your animals to deter flies. The only difference between a spray and a lotion is the base substance you use. With the spray you will use water and with the lotion you will use oil like coconut oil. For this I recommend you use a combination of natural oils 2-3 works best.

Fly Repelling Body Spray:

  • Take a 8-10oz spray bottle and fill it with 2-4oz of rubbing alcohol (You can also use Olive Oil, Witch Hazel, Sun flower Oil or even Vodka).
  • Add 30-50 drops of your essential oils (This will measure the strength of the odour given off by the spray) Citronella/Basil/Eucalyptus or Lavender/Eucalyptus/Citronella are my preferred mixes.
  • Fill the rest of the bottle with fresh water.
  • Shake to combine the ingredients.
  • Apply directly to uncovered areas of your body.
  • Keep away from your eyes and broken skin.

Fly Repelling Body Lotion:

Take a small glass jar or small tub and fill it with 8-10oz of Coconut oil or Babassu Oil which ever you prefer. (You can also use Aloe Vera cream or gel based products)

  • Now add 30-50 drops of your chosen essential oils. (The more drops you add the stronger odour you will get)
  • Mix ingredients together completely
  • Seal tub or jar and allow sitting for at least an hour.
  • Apply to uncovered parts of your body.
  • Keep away from your eyes and broken skin.

You will want to store your newly created lotion or spray in a cool dark area away from direct sunlight as this can ruin the solution before the next time you need to use it. Now that you know how to repel flies with essential oils and you can use these methods to get rid of flies. I would love to hear some of your recipes for creating fly repelling creams and lotions from natural essential oils. Please feel free to comment or contact me with them.
